18 detained for China apartment fire that claimed 19 lives

The fire broke out on Saturday evening at a three-storey apartment block in Beijing's southern Daxing district, and a probe in to its cause was underway, Xinhua reported, adding that anyone found to be responsible would be punished.

Chinese police have detained 18 people in connection with a fire in an apartment that claimed 19 lives. Seven of them are out of danger and one remains in a critical condition, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted Rui as saying. A large refrigeration facility had been under construction in the building's basement, and preliminary investigations suggested the fire may have started there, Xinhua said late on Monday.

Cai Qi and acting mayor Chen Jining led other officials to the site of the fire on Sunday morning and stood in silent tribute to the victims. All eight people who were injured in the fire were taken to the hospital.

"Lessons of the fire is extremely grave".

Cai ordered a clean-up of industrial compounds, illegal construction and disorderly venues in order to eliminate fire risks.

"We have set up a team to investigate the accident, everything is under investigation now", said Sun, a spokesman for the local Daxing district government, who declined to give his full name.
