7 out of 10 Malaysian children worry a lot about bullying

From its findings, Malaysian children were the most anxious about bullying compared to three out 10 children in Japan, and four out 10 in the United Kingdom according to the comparative survey.

The comparative survey involved 11,000 boys and girls aged between nine and 18 in 14 countries including Brazil, Egypt, India, Turkey and the US.

The global survey, which asked kids about issues that were important to them, also found that 69 per cent of Kiwi kids anxious about natural disasters personally affecting them, 62 per cent about mistreatment or bullying, and 53 per cent about threats to nature.

It also found that children were concerned about violence against children and more than half of the participants in the survey expressed mistrust of adults and leaders.

Unicef's Child Rights Education Advisor, Jacqui Southey isn't surprised it's an issue but is surprised by the size of the issues.

The online survey as a part of World Children's Day study mentions that 15% of respondents in India said they would like to invite Bachchan to their birthday parties while 14% would rather have PM Modi attend.

"The global UNICEF survey echoed findings from the Children4Change opinion conducted locally in Malaysia in terms of children's concerns and priorities", the statement said.

"Unfortunately, over half feel that even when asked of their opinions, they are not really listened to, or that their voice does not influence change and as adults we should listen - we should consult children on issues that affect them and take their opinions into account, although we might think we don't always know what is best for them".

As many as "180 million children live in 37 countries where they are more likely to live in extreme poverty, be out of school, or be killed by violent death than children living in those countries were 20 years ago", the analysis said.

"Reflecting a sentiment where perhaps religion is perceived as more dictatorial then democratic, 61 per cent of Indian children felt that their opinions were not heard or appreciated by religious leaders", the analysis said.

A GLOBAL survey has revealed that bullying is the number one concern for Malaysian children, followed by climate change and poverty.

Malaysian children also top the charts in smartphone usage at 80%, compared with their counterparts in the USA (74%), United Kingdom (73%) and Japan (63%), and spend equal time on social media (59%) and homework (59%).

About 30 children from across the social spectrum in Malaysia will participate in the Children's Media Takeover programme Monday to make their voices heard on various media platforms during World Children's Day.
