A Deadly, Costly Hurricane Season Comes to an End

A Deadly, Costly Hurricane Season Comes to an End

Overall, a total of 17 named storms occurred in 2017 for the ninth most in recorded history.

The 2018 hurricane season will officially start on June 1st, but tropical storms have been known to form in the Atlantic as early as January.

November 30th means the end of Hurricane Season - and for those in Florida, Puerto Rico and nations across the Atlantic Ocean, it couldn't end soon enough.

As seen in the chart below, the one area where experts were far off the mark was in the number of major hurricanes that formed.

A trio of major hurricanes hit U.S. soil this year, in what could be the most expensive hurricane season with damage estimates ranging up to $300-$475 billion. That includes at least $32 billion in damages from Maria, $60 billion from Irma and $114 from Harvey.

A fourth storm, Hurricane Nate also made USA landfall, but never reached major hurricane level.

The season really heated up toward late August as major category 4 hurricane Harvey made multiple landfalls along the TX/LA coasts.

Two months after Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico, half of the population remains without power.

Both Hurricanes Irma and Maria reached Category 5 strength, with wind speeds reaching 175 miles per hour. Cindy swept ashore as a tropical storm near Cameron, Louisiana and was the first tropical system to make landfall in the state since Isaac in 2012. The storm quickly strengthened to a devastating category five storm that ripped through the Caribbean, bringing death and destruction to the Florida Keys. The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season - the year of Katrina - blew away records with 28 named storms, of which 15 were hurricanes.

While this year's season was above average, it was not a record breaker.
