A lawsuit over Goodell's contract could be very costly for Jerry Jones

A lawsuit over Goodell's contract could be very costly for Jerry Jones

If Jones has a problem with Roger Goodell, then, especially as the owner of the richest franchise in the sport, he should be free to voice his opinion and try to win others to his side. The punishment options include fines, docking draft picks, suspending Jones or the so-called "nuclear option" of forcing Jones to forfeit ownership of the Cowboys.

Several fellow owners of National Football League teams have given Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones a cease-and-desist warning, threatening to punish him over his efforts to block a contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell, according to several people with knowledge of the situation. Falcons owner Arthur Blank pushed Jones off of the compensation committee, even though Jones' role was an unofficial one.

Jones asserted Tuesday that "well over half this league" wants Goodell's contract to be negotiated by the full group.

Jerry Jones has refuted the New York Times report that he has been issued a cease-and-desist warning from the six NFL owners on the compensation committee in response to Jones reportedly threatening to sue the league and the owners on the committee.

Jones blew off the threats from his fellow owners. Goodell's contract is set to expire after the 2018 season.

Goodell is seeking the use of a private jet for life as part of his new five-year compensation package from the league's owners, ESPN reported Sunday.

"Roger has nearly 18 months [left before the contract expires]", Jones said. "The negotiations are progressing and we will keep ownership apprised of the negotiations as they move forward".

"I like to hope that Tyron (Smith) is back" said Jones. We've got all the time in the world to extend him. "We need to slow this train down". "We do not intend to publicly comment on our discussions".
