Amsterdam wins European Union medicine agency, 900 jobs leaving London over Brexit

Amsterdam wins European Union medicine agency, 900 jobs leaving London over Brexit

Other first round vote getters included Bratislava (15), Barcelona (13), Stockholm (12), Athens (10), Porto (10), Bucharest (7), Warsaw (7), Brussels (5), Helsinki (5), Vienna (4), Bonn (3), Lille (3), Sofia (3).

The decision will determine where the 900 staff of the London-based agency will be relocated, but the EMA has warned that staffers might refuse to move to some of the 19 cities under consideration.

The outcome was welcomed by European pharmaceuticals bodies. If it is still tied, the Estonian meeting chairman will simply draw lots.

Ireland confirmed on Monday that it had withdrawn its bid for the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in order to focus on its bid for the European Banking Authority (EBA). One country abstained in the vote.

The European Medicines Agency has less than 17 months to complete the move, but Amsterdam was considered ideally suited because of its location, the building it had on offer and other facilities.

Before an expected announcement this evening (20 November) on the future home of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), Dublin has made a decision to pull out of the race.

In all, 19 cities had bid for the prestige and economic boost that the arrival of the EMA's 900 staff and many offices for worldwide pharmaceuticals companies will bring.

Estonia's European Union minister Matti Maasikas, who was chairing the voting session, called the contest "a sad reminder of the concrete consequences of Brexit".

Despite fierce competition, the 27 EU states - minus Britain - are also keen to avoid any protracted and bruising dispute over the matter as they see preserving unity as essential in facing Brexit, the biggest setback in the post-World War Two history of European integration. Britain will leave the European Union in March 2019.

Each EU nation's representative was allowed to rank candidate cities from first to third, with three points for each first place vote.
