Apple reported to be working on laser-powered, 3D-sensing rear camera

Apple is betting so hard on the added value of its inimitable TrueDepth camera kit that allows Face ID biometric unlocking and entertaining crowd-pleasers like Animojis, that it made several compromises with the look and app compatibility of the iPhone X (looking at you, notch-y top).

However, the report states that the rear-facing sensor would rely on a time-of-flight approach. The 3D sensors help in creating a three-dimensional map of the user's face, which is why hackers have to go through a lot of hoops to try to trick Face ID security. Talking about the technology behind the existing system, the TrueDepth sensor basically depends on a structured-light technique. This will allow the device to establish a depth map that can be used in facial recognition as well as AR application.

The good news though, Apple will keep the TrueDepth system and what that means is that 2019 iPhones will have both front and rear-facing 3-D sensing capabilities.

The depth information can also be obtained using a dual camera system, which is what most other phones including the newest iPhones use.

We only had a small taste of what the Apple iPhone 3D Sensor can do this year and we are sure Apple will be working on it to make sure it has more to offer in the future. Infineon stands out from the pack since it has already worked with Google for the AR-centric Project Tango back in 2014.

This will take the firm closer to making the smartphone into a leading augmented reality (AR) device, people familiar with the matter said to Bloomberg.

What Are The Laser-Based 3D Sensors For?

Current AR apps for the iOS can place virtual objects in space relative to flat surfaces, but they could not, for example, place the virtual objects behind a real-world item.

Sources say testing of the new image sensor is still in the early stages and there's a chance it won't end up in the 2019 iPhone.

The next generation of Apple Inc.'s iPhone will have lasers - literally, at least according to a newly published report.
