Apple Switching To Intel For iPhone 11 Chipset, Abandoning Qualcomm

The next-gen of wireless communication is pegged to benefit users with multi-gigabit speed without any cables.

Intel's latest LTE modem delivers Cat-19 capabilities and supports speeds up to 1.6 gigabits per second. The news comes as Intel today announced that it has "successfully completed a full end-to-end 5G call based on its early 5G silicon, a key milestone in its development".

The flagship announcement is the XMM 8000 series, a family of 5G multi-mode modems that operate in both the sub-6GHz and millimetre wave global radio spectrum bands. Intel expects that the XMM 8060 will begin shipping as part of 5G-ready devices in mid-2019. Intel's XMM 8060 5G modem chip should be offered by the chip maker prior to the expected 2020 launch of 5G service. But, Intel hasn't lifted their focus from the LTE networks yet, as the 5G networks might take some time to mature.

It's worth noting that despite the different routes the companies are taking - the end destination of 2019 availability for commercial devices is the same.

These modems will allow our smartphones, computers, set-top boxes, etc., to connect to the blazing fast wireless networks.

On the 4G LTE front, Intel's current top-shelf modem is the XMM 7480, which supports 4x carrier aggregation and download/upload speeds of 600Mbps and 150Mbps respectively (it's prominently used in AT&T/T-Mobile versions of Apple's iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X). And just as Qualcomm claimed that it had made the first 5G NR data call, Intel's 5G lead Asha Keddy said that the 5G Test Platform (Gold Ridge) had also supported pre-standards 5G NR connections.

An unnamed source told Fast Company Apple's engineers "have been engaged with Intel counterparts for early work on 5G. while dialog between Apple and the dominant supplier in the industry, Qualcomm, has been limited".

Qualcomm, on the other hand, provides specialized features to carriers with its 5G modems. The latter supposedly considers providing the 5G modem for the iPhone a "must-win" and has employed an army in the multiple thousands to achieve this goal.

This SoC is probably going to be co-designed by Apple and Intel.
