Army strikes Gaza targets after Israelis come under fire on border

Israel's Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman has reportedly banned Swiss officials from entering the blockaded Gaza Strip from Israeli territory, according to Israeli media.

Just over two hours later, local residents in Gaza reported hearing further Israeli air strikes on the Strip.

The IDF later said they had used tanks and aircraft to attack four terror targets located in Gaza Strip in response to the mortar shells fired at an adjacent military outpost on the northern border. However, The Israeli military later said the sirens were a false alarm. At least three rounds of airstrikes had taken place by dusk, the Reuters witness said.

Some 15 mortar shells were fired Thursday from the Gaza Strip at the IDF post at the perimeter fence in the northern Gaza Strip, without casualties.

"We remain ready with the tools necessary and the capabilities at hand should Hamas or the Islamic Jihad act aggressively again".

Following the tunnel demolition, Islamic Jihad vowed to retaliate but Thursday's action was their first significant reaction.

The train service between the Israeli town of Sderot close the Gaza border and Ashkelon to the north was briefly suspended but resumed later in the evening.

The army generally holds Hamas responsible for all rocket-fire originating from the Gaza Strip.

Hamas has yet to comment on the Israeli ban.

Fatah's top negotiator said Wednesday that rival movement Hamas was "not committed" to a landmark Palestinian reconciliation agreement, two days ahead of a key deadline to implement the accord.
