British man breaks world record for fastest speed in a jet suit

In a similar albeit real-life situation, an Iron Man body suit was developed which can enable you to fly.

More recently, aviation giant Boeing announced that they were sponsoring a two-year long competition to encourage the development of personal vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) gear, which is essentially what an "Iron Man suit" is.

Browning's suit, called Daedalus, consists of a high-tech exoskeleton, four arm-mounted gas turbine engines and two hip-mounted gas turbine engines.

This record is not all about the jet engine suit though - the family-man had to practice core strength exercises prior to the attempt to make sure he was able to balance and hold his position in the air while flying. Meanwhile, the rest of his suit has been built from ultra-light protective armor, and includes a sturdy helmet, a lightweight protective chestplate, and snake bite-proof walking boots.

Richard Browning took a Guinness World Record for fastest speed in a body-controlled jet engine power suit.

Browning showcased his ground-breaking invention at the Lagoona Park in Reading.

Browning said he was "delighted" to have set a record.

His predictions for Daedalus are prodigious, claiming it will eventually be capable of flying at several hundred miles per hour at altitudes of thousands of feet.

In science fiction, the only kinds of inventors foolhardy to test their creations themselves end up turning into Spider-Man supervillains, but thus far Browning has resisted the urge to paint his suit a garish color and start robbing banks.
