British surfer breaks his back in massive wipe-out in Portugal

Nominated for the World Surfing League Wipeout of the Year, Andrew Cotton gets crushed by the massive lip and goes flying.

The big wave surfer was then thrown through the air by the sheer force of the water before crashing down hard on the sea's surface.

British surfer Andrew Cotton vows to return to the sport after wave leaves him hospitalised with broken back.

Cotton made a decision to tackle the famed big-wave spot Nazare in Portugal and things could've been a lot worse if it wasn't for quick thinking lifeguards and fellow surfers who rushed to his aid.

"What can I say, I got a little excited this morning and ending up having possibly the worst wipeout, impact-wise, of my life", Cotton posted on his Instagram after the accident.

Cotton - a famed big-wave rider who holds the record for the biggest wave ever surfed - was rescued and placed on a spinal board before being rushed to hospital.

Andrew Cotton shocked onlookers yesterday as he was wiped out by an enormous wave that left him with a broken back.

"Thank you to all the lifeguards and crew on the beach who help (ed) stabilise me and do a great spinal recovery", he said.

Let's hope he gets back to riding some big rollers as soon as possible.

But the raging white water eventually catches up to Andrew and swallows him up - before spitting him back out.

Local surfers believe Nazaré fired some of the biggest waves of the decade, as side-shore winds and a powerful NW swell channeled energy into Praia do Norte's underwater canyon.
