Buhari backs El-Rufai's move to sack teachers

President Buhari, who spoke at a special retreat of the Federal Executive Counicl (FEC) on Monday in Abuja, endorsed the primary education reforms being carried out by Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state.

The teachers failed the "competency" test conducted by the state government. It is a very very serious situation when teachers can not pass the exams they are supposed to teach the children to pass.

El-Rufai has therefore made a decision to fire all the teachers that failed and to replace them.

He lamented the bad condition of the sector, with 13.2 million children out of school.

Describing education as a launch pad to a prosperous future of any society, president Buhari said Nigeria can no longer pretend that all is well with its education system, emphasizing his administration's resolve to improve the lot of the people through the provision of quality and affordable education.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how two-thirds of primary school teachers in Kaduna State failed to score up to 75 per cent when asked to write examinations.

"Being an orphan, I still feel that boarding school moulded me". In ‚Äéthose days, teachers treated students or children like their own children. If you did well they will tell you, you did well, if you didn't do well they never spared the rod.

Director-General of the APC Governors Forum, Salihu Mohammed Lukman said the issue should not be politicised.

However, the proposed mass sacking has sparked controversy with the Nigeria Labour Congress warning there could be a "mother of all protests" over it, Vanguard reports. We can disagree with the approach of the state government, but the way to go is not to politicize this matter.

The President said teachers should be more reformed and impact the students with knowledge.

In a statement, the Kaduna State chairman of the group, Umar Ibrahim, said the information was gathered from reliable sources. "Therefore, we call on the state to shelve this planned demonstration and heed security advice", he added.
