Chennai: Arson, rampage at Sathyabama University after first year student kills self

Students torched furniture of the university hostel and held noisy protests outside.Night video images shared on social media by students show mattresses being set on fire in a hall.

Under police patrol, the situation is now under control. A senior police officer said, "The student, we understand, was caught copying and she was sent out of the hall by the invigilator".

Several first-year students set parts of campus on fire, reports confirmed.

The police said they are investigating the matter.

The 18-year-old first-year student was studying computer science at Chennai's Sathyabama University.

Sources said, the student had managed to sneak in a paper into the exam hall and was copying from it when the invigilator caught her red-handed. Depressed over the chiding, the girl went to her hostel room and hanged to death. By the time he saw Monica's message after the examination, and rushed to the hostel asking her friends to check on her, she was found hanging and taken to the hospital, where Monica was declared dead.

The victim's parents have been informed. and her body has been sent for post-mortem. She's from Andhra and students from her state indulged in violence. Meanwhile, batchmates and other students in the university staged a protest against the college management for driving the girl to commit suicide.

Around 200 police personnel were present on the campus to help quell the unrest, while armed police have been deployed outside Sathyabama University.
