Cow vigilantes kill one, injure another in Rajasthan

A man who was transporting cows near the Rajasthan-Haryana border was shot dead by unidentified men, Indian media reported. Later, they dumped Ummar's body on railway tracks near Ramgarh railway station 12 to 14 km away. One of Ummar's associate is now missing, while another one, Tahir Khan is now in hospital after surviving bullet shots in the shoulder.

The report added that the incident took place in Fahari village near Govindh Gadh in Alwar district of Rajasthan when the youths were transporting cows from Mewat in Haryana to Bharatpur in Rajasthan. "Till then, we will be sitting on dharna outside the hospital gates", he said.

Anil Beniwal, assistant superintendent of police, Alwar (south), said the whole incident was being wrongly presented by combining two different incidents.

An investigation is now on to identify the victim and his attacker. Ilyas Mohammed, the uncle of Ummar, said in the FIR, "People who surrounded their vehicle claimed to be cow vigilantes and were calling out for a person called Rakesh among them".

Relatives and members of the Meo Muslim community, to which the victim belong, have refused to accept the mutilated body of Usman Khan from the hospital's mortuary where it was being kept.

According to sources, the two men, Ummar Khan and Tahir Khan, were taking the cows in a truck from Alwar to Bharatpur when they were waylaid by a mob and assaulted. The first, after the pick-up van with three calves and three cows was traced at Govindgarh.Alwar SP Rahul Prakash said, "It's a clear case of cow smuggling and we have lodged a case for the same. Later, with the help of the police, the cows were taken to Shri Krishna Gaushala in Bambora Ghati by the cow vigilantes", Khan's wife Baseri told Hindustan Times. "It's quite evident that the police shot Mohammed and later dumped his body to destroy evidence", said Kavita Srivastava of the People's Union for Civil Liberties. But the person couldn't be identified immediately.
