Declawing procedure for cats now banned in Denver

Declawing procedure for cats now banned in Denver

Monday evening, city council members will make a final vote on a proposed bill to ban the declawing of cats in Denver.

The city is the first municipality in the country outside of California to ban declawings.

Most veterinarians already say they won't perform a declaw surgery for an owner's vanity.

Kirsten Butler, a veterinary technician, said she no longer participates in the procedures.

The procedure is more often used to prevent cats from messing up furniture and other household items.

Many veterinarians offer elective declawing in suburban Denver.

But vets say they want the option to do so in case it's a health issue with the pet owner.

"A decision to declaw a cat is affected by many human and animal factors", Andre said at a public hearing November 6.

Declawing, or onychectomy, is the operation to remove an animal's claws surgically.

Denver joins San Francisco, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Berkeley, Culver City and Burbank, which have all enacted similar bans.

Declawing, or onychectomy, is an amputation and should be regarded as a major surgery, according to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation.

Some argued before city council that the ban would take away options for cat owners.

9 News reports that in the USA, declawing is prohibited in the following California cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Monica, Berkeley, Beverly Hills, Culver City, West Hollywood, and Burbank.
