Dimitrov beats Goffin to win ATP Finals champion

Dimitrov beats Goffin to win ATP Finals champion

He progressed to the semis at the first grand slam, until he was defeated by a resilient Nadal, but beat the same opponent he faced in the ATP Final, David Goffin, for his second title in February at the Sofia Open.

"But whatever happened today is less important than if I look at the entire season. And right now those are the moments that I rise up to".

Dimitrov's unbeaten run in London earned him a cool $2.5 million, with the 1,500 ranking points catapulting him to an impressive third place on the end-of-year rankings - behind only tennis greats Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Dimitrov won in 2 hours, 30 minutes, 15 seconds, adding 11 minutes to the mark set by Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2011.

That wasn't the only record Dimitrov set.

He became the first debutant to win the season finale since Spaniard Alex Corretja in 1998. David Goffin has one more week of tennis, playing in the Davis Cup finals for his country.

"For my first time, to play the three guys that were in our group, to get through, was a big confidence booster for me".

"As you saw last week in Milan, there are so many good players coming".

Goffin will be the underdog again after winning just two games against Dimitrov on Wednesday.

Sock saved a break point before holding with an ace down the T to get to 3-1 and then broke back when Dimitrov netted a rally ball. He leveled in the eighth game before breaking once more in the 12th to snatch the set in which Goffin hit eight more winners.

Dimitrov's confidence carried into the second set, where he brought up the first break point in the sixth game, only for Goffin to produce a stunning cross-court backhand victor to save it. I think I needed that.

Dimitrov was more clinical, striking in the sixth game to take control.

With three match points in hand, there was some spirited defence from Goffin to delay the inevitable, turning to whip up the crowd.

"I hope also Kei (Nishikori), Tomas (Berdych) and Milos (Raonic) all find their way back on tour and prefer to be in Australia because that would make it quite epic, a comeback for all the guys", Federer said. It paid off. I started to serve well. But, yeah, I just still have a lot to give. "He was really solid".

"I want to thank one person here, my girlfriend Nicole", he said.

"Of course, one of my main goals is to win a tournament, a grand slam tournament", Dimitrov said.
