DSS Operatives Bar EFCC from Arresting Its former DG

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu on Wednesday said that he was not discouraged about Tuesday's failed attempt to arrest former Director-General of the Department of State Security (DSS), Ita Ekpeyong, and former head of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ayo Oke.

Daily Trust gathered Tuesday that Officers of the DSS thwarted the effort of EFCC operatives from arresting Ita, at his Abuja residence today.

Punch reports that the agents said their action is a result of "orders from above".

Sources at the EFCC revealed that both former security officials were invited by the anti-graft body to answer questions on allegations of financial misappropriations levelled against them but they refused to show up for interrogation.

The EFCC officials then retreated temporarily and cordoned off all roads leading to the property with a yellow tape which bore the words, 'crime scene, do not cross'.

However, the source alleged that about 30 DSS' operatives were on ground to stop the arrest of their former boss.

Ekpenyong has been under investigation for his alleged role in the disbursement of funds meant for arms.

Another source, who spoke in similar vein, had wondered: "I don't know whether it is within their (DSS') brief to (allegedly) prevent a law enforcement agency from executing arrest or search warrant on a property belonging to a retired staff of the agency".

An attempt by an operative of the EFCC to take photographs nearly led to a shootout. with the DSS operatives cocking their guns.
