EA on Visceral's Cancelled Star Wars Game, "Too Linear"

EA on Visceral's Cancelled Star Wars Game,

Speaking at the annual Credit Suisse Technology, Media and Telecom Conference (via DualShockers) earlier today, chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen acknowledged that there were indeed concerns about linearity.

The closure of Visceral Games was a turning point in today's gaming community. Wholly representative or not, Jorgensen's comments reveal more top-level insight about why the company made a decision to nix the project and its developer; he said Visceral was already "down to about 80 people, which is sub-scale in our business" when it was shut down (several other studios inside EA were assisting with its creation).

Remember when EA canceled the Visceral Star Wars game and people freaked out about it signalling the death of single-player games? The publisher expects to make over $5 billion in the fiscal year ending in March 2018, and service games will be a chunk of those earnings. That's why Visceral is no more, that's why EA now wants to find more ways to monetize it and that's why it will reboot the project.

This happened a few weeks ago, with Visceral shut down and the Star Wars game cut down before it could launch. "Over the last five or six years, [Visceral Games] had shrunk in size", Jorgensen said. "It was down to about 80 people, which is sub-scale in our business". As of right now, EA is looking at the discarded game in an effort to revamp it into a more online-focused venture with parts they deem usable. At the moment they're looking what can be done with parts of the game that were already developed, whether it's making the title in a different style with a different studio, or reusing those parts in other games.

"It was an economic decision at the end of the day", Jorgensen said.

Jorgensen detailed that the studios' attempt to build a game that "really pushed gameplay to the next level" paired with the cost of development and the fact that, in EA's opinion, people do not enjoy linear games as much as they used to, made the studio an economic drain.
