ESPN will lay off more than 100 staffers after Thanksgiving

ESPN is expected to trim its current employee base by more than 100 positions, as the Disney-owned sports-media outlet places new emphasis on digital initiatives such as a new video-streaming service, according to a report in Sports Illustrated. "ORCRP017360-topic.html" class="local_link" >Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN will lead to the layoffs of another 100 employees this year in a further sign of how the sports media giant has been buffeted by changing consumer habits.

Last April, ESPN eliminated around 100 journalists and on-air personalities.

There are now more reported details about the expected next round of layoffs at ESPN.

ESPN declined to make executives available for comment.

Big-name talents such as Trent Dilfer, Ed Werder and Danny Kanell were among those who were laid off this past spring. At that time the company said: "A necessary component of managing change involves constantly evaluating how we best utilize all of our resources, and that sometimes involves hard decisions".

Last month Michael McCarthy of Sporting News first noted a round of layoffs were coming to ESPN.

Numerous upcoming layoffs at ESPN are expected to impact "SportsCenter". It's no secret the business has seen a general decline in subscribers over several years' time, even as it continues to pay millions of dollars in rights fees every year to the NFL, Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and other sports organizations to show the games that bring audiences to its screens.

Part of the reason ESPN will conduct the moves in late November/early December, two sources said, is to get employees an additional year in the stock vesting program.

As traditional TV becomes less a staple of the household and with ESPN tied up in exorbitant contracts to air live sports events, the network has seen declining gains, and multiple rounds of layoffs. The White House called for Hill's firing after she called President Donald Trump a "white supremacist" on Twitter.

The network also recently cancelled "Barstool Van Talk" after just one episode because ESPN wanted to distance itself from the controversial Barstool Sports site.
