Facebook's smart AI will help people with suicidal thoughts

Facebook's smart AI will help people with suicidal thoughts

This new measure will also apparently be applied to the global user base of Facebook, except those in the EU.

According to TechCrunch, Facebook is rolling out AI that will help detect posts indicating suicidal ideation before they are reported.

"Today, 99 percent of the ISIS and al Qaeda-related terror content we remove from Facebook is content we detect before anyone in our community has flagged it to us, and in some cases, before it goes live on the site".

United States high-tech giant Facebook said Monday it is using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, including pattern recognition, to detect whether someone is expressing thoughts of suicide in a post or live video. It's initiating "wellness checks" on people whose posts may indicate they're at some type of risk and sending first responders to make sure they're OK - particularly on Facebook Live. Rosen, however, said that Facebook is now expanding the program to the rest of the world, except in the European Union where data privacy laws prohibit the technology from being used. The tool also picks up signals from the comments on the post or video, such as through friends asking "Are you ok?" "We are committed to continuing to invest in pattern recognition technology to better serve our community". The team includes a dedicated group of specialists who have specific training in suicide and self harm. "Can I help?" as a warning that can alert first responders to help anyone who is likely to commit suicide.

Context is critical for our review teams, so we have developed ways to enhance our tools to get people help as quickly as possible.

The primary work process of this AI is reactions and comments on any post. If the AI finds someone thinking about death or any other life taking action, then the AI will immediately flag the post to a human moderator who will then respond to that by sending essential resources for his/her mental health.

The use of AI technology follows steps Facebook announced earlier this year to improve its suicide prevention tools.

While until recently, Facebook used a mixture of people and software to identify which posts should be removed, this work is nearly exclusively done by automated systems that analyze texts, photos and videos that have their own separate "digital footprints".

With the help of our partners and people's friends and family on Facebook, we hope we can continue to support those in need.
