Falcons hold on for 34-31 victory over Seahawks

Tight end Luke Willson #82 of the Seattle Seahawks is tackled by defensive tackle Grady Jarrett #97 of the Atlanta Falcons for a loss of 4 yards during a fake field goal attempt during the second quarter of the game at CenturyLink Field on November 20, 2017 in Seattle, Washington. Seattle, also 6-4, missed an opportunity to tie the Los Angeles Rams for first place in the NFC West.

Seattle got the ball back at its own 30 with 1:46 left and no timeouts and moved just close enough to give Walsh - who set an National Football League record when he was with Minnesota and made 12 straight kicks of 50 yards or longer - a shot. His kick was down the middle but short.

Atlanta led 24-17 at the end of an action-packed first half that featured just one punt - that by the Falcons.

Atlanta began its ensuing possession on the 16-yard line.

But the Seahawks quickly clawed back.

Walsh, who had a career long of 56 yards and a season long of 49 yards, came up just short.to the relief of the Falcons. "I thought our guys did a good job with that in the second half".

"You've got to keep running the ball, and you've got to execute it at a high level on every snap when you do it", Ryan said.

With seven seconds left in the first half and facing a fourth-and-one at the Atlanta 17, Seattle inexplicably tried a fake field goal.

Those three points proved to be big and Jarrett played well the entire night, recording a sack, two tackles for loss and three quarterback hits.

Atlanta made a decision to take a holding penalty to negate a fourth-and-two and set up a third-and-12. Matt Bryant added a 19-yard field goal with 3:49 left to put the Falcons ahead by 11, and Wilson's late heroics weren't enough.

On Seattle's first possession, Atlanta cornerback Desmond Trufant - a Tacoma native and University of Washington alum - almost had a pick-six if it weren't for Wilson chasing him down to make the tackle. The defensive tackle made a better play.

Instead of talk about Seattle's resiliency playing without Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor, or pulling out a home victory to move atop the NFC West, the Seahawks were left to answer questions about unusual special teams decisions and whether they must play differently going forward to have success. Ryan found Toilolo on a 25-yard TD in the third quarter to give Atlanta a 31-20 lead.

The play typified a night when the Seattle defense didn't give up a ton of yards but had trouble making the key stops when it mattered as Atlanta converted 9 of 14 on third down. However, his 52-yard field-goal attempt fell short, and Atlanta escaped with the win. He also produced 86 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

After the Falcons (6-4) grabbed a 34-23 lead with three minutes, 49 seconds remaining, Wilson quickly drove the Seahawks downfield to pull within three on a ideal 29-yard pass to Doug Baldwin, who ran right by Falcons cornerback Robert Alford. Ryan was then sacked by Sheldon Richardson, who beat Atlanta guard Wes Schweitzer.

Although Seattle's defense was able to force the Falcons to punt on their next possession, it was the Atlanta defense that scored the next points.

Seattle took over at its own 30 with 1:46 left. Running back Thomas Rawls was a healthy scratch for Seattle, leaving Eddie Lacy, J.D. McKissic and Mike Davis as the running backs. With no timeouts and seven seconds remaining, Carroll initially left his offense on the field.
