FCC Head to Propose Vacating Obama-Era Net Neutrality Rules

FCC Head to Propose Vacating Obama-Era Net Neutrality Rules

The Federal Communications Commission is expected to reveal plans for dismantling Obama-era net neutrality rules on Tuesday, according to a report.

In addition, Mr. Pai plans to reverse a decision from the Obama administration that declared broadband be treated like a utility, a classification that opened the door to many more regulations for internet service providers, the people said.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, a President Trump appointee, will seek to remove the regulations that require internet service providers to produce web traffic equally, sources told Politico.

The FCC is expected to vote on Pai's plan during the commission's December 14 meeting.

Pai has the votes on the FCC to roll back the rules, along with the regulatory foundation that gave the FCC the authority to impose them in 2015.

Net neutrality places restrictions on Internet service providers in terms of speed and accessibility. The net neutrality rules were created in 2015 after numerous debates about the issue.

Pai's proposal is the latest step in a years-long tug-of-war over regulations dictating how companies such as AT&T and Comcast allow access to internet content - from Facebook Inc.'s social media site to Netflix Inc.'s streaming videos.

An FCC spokeswoman did not return a request for comment.

Numerous specifics of Pai's plan remain unclear, but a central part of the effort will involve undoing the FCC's decision to declare Internet providers as telecommunications service providers. If the move is approved - and it likely will be, given that Pai and the Republican Party control three of the FCC's five seats - responsibility for regulating Internet providers could flow away from the FCC and toward the Federal Trade Commission, which is charged with protecting consumers from unfair and deceptive business practices.
