Federal Bureau of Investigation report points to continued rise in American hate crimes

Hate crimes in Minnesota rose for the second straight year in 2016, with the bulk of crimes motivated by the victim's race or ethnicity.

Of those single-bias offences in 2016, almost 58 per cent were motivated by race, ethnicity or ancestry bias, while 21 per cent were driven by religious bias and about 18 per cent were caused due to bias towards sexual orientation.

Analysis of the 6,063 single-bias incidents involving 7,509 victims revealed that 21 percent were prompted by religious bias, the second-highest motivation for offenders behind race or ethnicity.

There were 6,121 hate crime incidents recorded previous year, an nearly 5 percent rise from 2015 and a 10 percent increase from 2014, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Hate Crimes Statistics report said.

There were 10 incidents of hate-crimes against Hindus and seven against Sikhs in 2016 - the year of the rise of Donald Trump as a politician and his election as president.
