File a claim if you paid scammers through Western Union

The scammers told people to send money through Western Union.

Victims of fraud who sent a money transfer through Western Union may be eligible for compensation for their losses.

DOJ is now using that money to provide refunds to people who were tricked into using Western Union to pay scammers.

Completed claim forms must be submitted online or mailed back to the settlement administrator by February 12, 2018.

The fund, administered by the Department of Justice's Victim Asset Recovery Program, was created as the result of a multi-state settlement reached with Western Union in January by New York Attorney General Attorney Eric Schneiderman, 49 other states and the District of Columbia. Various Western Union agents were complicit in these fraud schemes, often processing the fraud payments in return for a cut of the fraud proceeds.

Those eligible may receive a claim form in the mail in the next two weeks that will explain how to file a claim.

The Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice brought up charges to Western Union in January 2017.

FTC officials said Western Union was aware of the problem and received hundreds of thousands of complaints from people who claimed to have wired money based on bogus lottery winnings, prizes, family emergencies, online dating and other scams.

No one associated with the claims process will call to ask for consumers' bank account or credit card number.
