French skier Poisson dies in training

The French skiing federation says downhiller David Poisson has died following a training crash in Canada.

Poisson's death came 16 years after super-G world champion Regine Cavagnoud, a prominent French skier, died in Austria from brain injuries following a collision in training. "Devastated by the news", the president of the FFS Michel Vion, the national technical director Fabien Saguez and the entire coaching and administrative staff of the Federation, "join in the pain of his loved ones in these times particularly hard", says the press release of the Federation.

Poisson was training with team-mates ahead of World Cup events at Lake Louise on November 25 and 26.

Poisson also finished third in World Cup downhill held in Santa Caterina, Italy in December, 2015.

He represented France at both the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Sochi respectively.

American Alpline ski racer Steven Nyman tweeted: "Is this true about David Poisson?"

Poisson was fourth in the prestigious Kitzbuehel downhill in 2013.

A French national ski team veteran and former Olympian as been killed during a training run at the Nakiska Ski Area west of Calgary. "So sad. I can't believe it".
