Google parent's Project Loon delivers Internet to 100000 in Puerto Rico

Google parent's Project Loon delivers Internet to 100000 in Puerto Rico

Providing an internet connection to more than 100,000 people is not a major success, especially considering that the population of Puerto Rico is at 3.4 million.

With Project Loon proving its usefulness in Puerto Rico and Peru, Alphabet's X Lab should be commended for technology that really helps people in need.

Still, a lot of the US territory's 3.5 million people are without internet and cell services after Hurricane Maria knocked out much of Puerto Rico's infrastructure.

In October, Google parent Alphabet was granted an emergency license by the Federal Communications Commission to use Project Loon to try to restore cellular services in Puerto Rico.

It's the first time the balloons have been launched at such a rapid pace.

Project Loon also released a video of Pedro Emmanuelli, a "launch specialist" from Puerto Rico, explaining how the operation releases balloons from a launch site in Winnemucca, Nevada, that end up hovering above Puerto Rico.

Power line poles downed by the passing of Hurricane Maria lie on a street in San Juan, Puerto Rico on November 7, 2017.

Project Loon, a balloon-powered internet program from Alphabet's X, partnered with AT&T and T-Mobile to transmit internet to people in need on the island. To keep them clustered over the island, the balloons are using computer algorithms to navigate the atmospheric conditions.

This is the second time that Project Loon has been used to connect people after a disaster.

The balloons are designed to hover 11 miles above the Earth to create an aerial wireless network.

The inflatable part of the balloon is called a balloon envelope made from sheets of polyethylene plastic that are 49ft (15 metres) wide and 40ft (12 metres) tall when inflated.

The signals can then hop forward, from one balloon to the next, along a backbone of up to five balloons.
