Group calls for boycott of National Football League on Veterans Day Weekend

The NFL and NFLPA said on Saturday, "There has been no change in the current policy regarding the anthem", saying NFL players "should" stand for "The Star-Spangled Banner".

Lower Burrell and Jeannette veterans organizations will boycott the Pittsburgh Steelers game Sunday amid a national boycott of all NFL games as part of Veterans Day observances this weekend.

The president and other critics argued that the playing of the national anthem was the wrong time for protests, regardless of the reason, because the song represents US national unity and respect for those who serve in the military.

The owners say interest this year in NFL Sundays at the tavern is less than in the past, but game day remains one of the busiest days of the week at the restaurant. No other protests immediately emerged. The Seattle Seahawks stood during the national anthem for Thursday's away game against the Arizona Cardinals.

The NFL Players Association had pleaded with players to observe a two-minute moment of silence before games to honor veterans.

But the newspaper speculated that National Football League players may forgo their protests this weekend because of Veterans Day.

The VFW leadership made the change "just to respect Veterans Day weekend and to respect the people who fought for this country and to preserve the freedom we have now", said Lower Burrell VFW Commander Lee Johnson, who served in Vietnam. But what they showed is something we haven't been used to seeing this season. He also stood with teammates for the first time since President Donald Trump criticized players for protesting. Wide receiver Louis Murphy held up his right fist during the anthem.

But the Lower Burrell American Legion is following suit with the VFW and for the first time will not broadcast the National Football League games on Sunday.

The team had several members of the defensive line sit during the national anthem in the past couple of weeks. Vernon has protested even while injured and inactive, but Sunday's game marked his return in uniform. Quinn was ill and inactive for the game.

The New Orleans Saints again knelt as a team before the anthem, then rose together for the song, with some players and coaches locking arms in solidarity.
