Australia spinner Nathan Lyon doesn't tend to step back from confrontation, on or off the field.

Lyon had claimed ahead of the first Test that many in the England squad remained shaken after their 5-0 defeat in Australia four years ago, and that Australia hoped to "end careers" in the current series.

It was uncharacteristic stuff from the easy going Lyon, who has become a national hero in Australia thanks to his "Nice Garry" catchphrase. On Lyon's comments, the former captain said he put a lot of pressure on himself.

Spinner of Australia Nathon Lyon Finally got his award for some smart bowling with two wickets as England suffered a middle-order collapse to be used for 302 and bring lunch on day two of the series-opening Ashes Test in Brisbane on Friday.Having moved to 246 for four, England lost their last six wickets for 56 runs at the Gabba. "It is probably the best it has ever come out of my hand". "To set him up with a couple of overs of out swing and then get him with a big in-swinger ... that only comes off once in a 100 times but when it does, it's pretty special and fortunately it was their captain so I'm pretty happy with that".

Cummins claimed it was a wicket more similar to England than Australia after the usually juicy Gabba deck failed to offer bounce, pace or bite on the first day.

Before Brisbane, Vince averaged 19 and hadn't scored a half-century in his seven tests.

"The comments that I said before the match, it has nothing to do with the way I'm bowling now".

Lyon said it was a result of being on top of his game - not trying to back up his sledges.

"My confidence has grown a large amount over the last 14 months", he said.

"I have worked hard in the nets. and really nailed my consistency, really know my game inside and out and what works for me".

"I know I'm a leader, I know I'm one of the most experienced guys in that change room".

He added: "I am very proud of our bowling group to take the first ten wickets".

"I think it's a rubbish pitch and they couldn't have given them (England) a better Christmas present before the start of this tour", former Australian batsman Dean Jones told Fox Sports.

Lyon was less chatty when asked about his Prior barb.
