Hospital apathy: Parents cry foul over Rs 18 lakh bill, child dies

Hospital apathy: Parents cry foul over Rs 18 lakh bill, child dies

Fortis denied any wrongdoing saying all standard medical protocols and clinical guidelines were followed in treating the child Adya Singh.

Meanwhile, the health ministry has chose to look into the allegations of the family.

"The doctors kept the child in ICU for so many days, but her brain had already damaged gradually which the doctors deliberately did not test".

The hospital said that IV fluids and other supportive treatment was administered to the child who had Dengue Shock Syndrome, following which she was put on ventilator for 48 hours.

"We will take all the necessary actions", the minister said on Twitter while asking the family to submit details of the bill to his office.

"She was on ventilator and dialysis for 15 days". The release also added that, "On 14th September, family chose to take her away from the hospital against medical advice (LAMA - Leave Against Medical Advice) and she succumbed the same day".

In a statement, the hospital said that she was admitted with "Severe Dengue, which progressed to Dengue Shock Syndrome", adding that the family was kept informed of her "critical condition".

The bill runs into 19 pages and includes charges for 661 syringes and 2,700 gloves supposed to have been used in the treatment.

The photo of the bill, which Jayant's friend had posted on Twitter also shows that the Singhs were charged Rs 200 for strips to check blood sugar levels. "She passed away at the end of it.", he tweeted.

Even though the hospital charged so heavily, the family alleged that not much care was provided to their daughter. The hospital said that girl died on the same day. On September 15, when the family chose to take Adya away from the hospital, the hospital's behaviour changed. They alleged that the hospital did not even provide the family with an ambulance for taking Adya to another hospital. "She never regained consciousness", said Jayant Singh, Adya's father.

Fortis also said that they have been in touch with the family to address their concerns and remain available for any further support required. "Patient was treated in the Paediatric ICU for 15 days and was critical right from the time of admission, requiring intensive monitoring", he said, reported The Indian Express. "Treatment during these 15 days included mechanical ventilation, high frequency ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy, intravenous antibiotics, inotropes, sedation and analgesia", the hospital said.

We could direct our anger at Fortis Hospital and talk about ethics when a person's life is at stake, however, the fat bill handed to Adya's family speaks of a deeper issue - India does not have universal healthcare (UHC) and the government has made no impactful strides toward making healthcare affordable. "All consumables are transparently reflected in records and charged as per actuals", FHL added.
