HTC Vive Focus standalone VR headset launched

HTC Vive Focus standalone VR headset launched

"As the VR industry leader in China, it is our duty to help reduce market fragmentation and provide content developers with more ways to make money", HTC Vive head Alvin Wang Graylin said in a statement regarding the news. With the Vive Wave SDK, vendors can integrate accessories - be it a Leap Motion, gloves or even outside-in solutions for 6DoF input (and potentially eye-tracking solutions as icing on the cake).

While the USA has been a slow struggle platform-wise for Vive, China has been a different story where the company has already grown its smartphone-based mobile VR brand thanks to a software launcher tied to its Viveport content store.

Supporting this headset and the VR world in general is Vive Wave, which is, according to HTC, "an open platform and toolset that will enable easy Mobile VR content development and high-performance device optimisation for third-party partners". Developers who are already using Unity will enjoy the added benefit of the new one-click process to publish to Viveport, along with in-app payment support starting with China. "Vive Wave will assure a higher consistency in the user experience on a variety of mobile VR devices across various price points, making quality VR more accessible to the mass market". It should be the first standalone six-degrees-of-freedom VR headset to see release, though HTC isn't saying exactly when it'll be available.

HTC Vive report it is concerned by the continuing fragmentation of the VR market, particularly in China.

Beyond the Vive headset, Google had announced that they were also working with Lenovo on a wireless Daydream headset.

The new VR headset is called the Vive Focus, and unlike the regular Vive, offers a stand-alone, untethered VR experience. Offering a AMOLED display, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and featuring inside-out tracking with 6 degrees-of-freedom, as well as content on Vive Wave and the existing Viveport platform. At the time, the details were scarce, but now the company has revealed more details about the Vive Focus. HTC is also accepting applications for Vive Wave developer kits through the Chinese Vive developer hub.
