Iran rejects Macron call for talks on Iranian missiles

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said the missile program was defensive and unrelated to the 2015 nuclear deal that the country signed with the six world leaders, according to a statement published on ministry's website.

During his visit to the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, Macron suggested amending the JCPOA.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has responded to the call of the French President to hold talks on the country's ballistic missile program, firmly rejecting the idea and noting that it is exclusively defensive in nature.

Trump and his administration have accused Iran of using the ballistic-missile program to further development of its nuclear weapons.

The United States backed the Saudi claim that the missile was supplied by Iran and urged the United Nations to hold Tehran accountable for the violation.

Despite criticizing Iran over the missile launch, Macron said that France still stands by the nuclear deal, which puts restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

Eight reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have confirmed Iran's full compliance with the agreement.

The comments come in response to French President Emmanuel Macron, who said that there is a need to start negotiations regarding Iran's ballistic missiles.

But Macron said "we need to have a truthful dialogue" with Iran.

"The missile that was intercepted by Saudi Arabia launched from Yemen, which obviously is an Iranian missile, shows precisely the strength of their" weapons program, Macron said on November 9.

He emphasized that France must persuade its Persian Gulf allies to pursue "wise and unsentimental" policies and approaches. French arms sales to the Gulf Arab region have surged in recent years as Paris has nurtured new links with Arab states, which appreciate its tough stance on Iran and similar positions on the region's conflicts.

Qassemi finally noted that Iran expects the French government to adopt tangible measures including pressurizing its allies into immediately stopping their war and bloodshed in Yemen in order to establish ceasefire and restore peace and stability to the country.

The ballistic missile launched on November 4 was shot down near Riyadh's global airport, but was the first to get so close to the Saudi capital. A charge Iran strongly denies and, in turn, blames Riyadh.
