Iraq's Kurdistan 'will respect' court decision banning secession

Iraq's central bank has eased restrictions on private banks in its Kurdistan region, telling them they could keep branches there open just a week after ordering them closed, central bank sources told Reuters on Tuesday.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), based in Erbil, said in a statement it would respect the Federal Supreme Court's ruling on November 6.

"We believe that this decision must become a basis for starting an inclusive national dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad to resolve all disputes", the KRG said in a statement.

The court is responsible for settling disputes between Iraq's central government and the country's regions and provinces.

This is a major development after the controversial independence referendum held on September 25 by Kurdistan Regional Government.

Kirkuk is not part of the Kurdistan region, but its people took part in the referendum and overwhelmingly backed independence.

After the debacle, Masoud Barzani resigned from Presidency of KRG and handed over his powers to parliament and executive of the semi-autonomous region.

According to the statement released by the Iraqi presidency after a meeting with Douglas Silliman, the US ambassador to Baghdad, Masoum said that the success of security forces against Daesh stemmed from Iraqis' resolution to live together in a free, democratic and peaceful country.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, seeking to up the pressure in a stand-off with Iraq's Kurdish region, said on Tuesday he would act soon over border areas under Kurdish control but predicted his government's forces would regain them without violence.

"We've had for many years a very good relationship with the Kurds as you know and we've also been on the side of Iraq, even though we should have never been there in the first place", Trump told reporters at the the White House, according to Reuters.
