Israeli Prime Minister: "Peace between Israel, Egypt strategically beneficial for both countries"

Israeli Prime Minister:

Forty years after Egyptian President Anwar Sadat paid a historic visit to Israel, the Knesset is holding a series of special events marking the occasion, which led to the establishment of the first peace agreement between Israel and an Arab state.

"We don't only need a Palestinian Sadat, we also need an Israeli Begin", said Herzog.

However, Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotevely later provided the riposte to Herzog's swipe at PM Netanyahu.

"There are more than 200 territorial disputes in the world, but the conflict between us and the Palestinians is not one of them", said Hotovely. He described Sadat as "a courageous leader, who stood against the tide and paved the way for other Arab leaders to recognize the importance of strategic ties with Israel".

"I was born into peace", she said. He was later assassinated for making peace with the Jewish state. "It was a real breakthrough", said Knesset Speaker Yoel "Yuli" Edelstein in his opening remarks. "If we don't recognize the problem, we can not reach a solution".

Sadat's 1977 address to the Knesset is credited with paving a path for peace between the countries.

Egyptian Ambassador to Israel Hazem Khairat on Tuesday reiterated Egypt's stance on establishing an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with al-Quds (East Jerusalem) as its capital.

At the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu had the following to say regarding that event: "Today we mark 40 years to the historic visit of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in Jerusalem and Israel".
