IUDs cut risk of cervical cancer by one-third

IUDs cut risk of cervical cancer by one-third

The study also suggests that unvaccinated women should only need seven lifetime screens when the new screening test comes in, five fewer than is now standard.

As the risk of cervical cancer is considerably reduced, the study suggests that the number of screens should be decreased accordingly, avoiding unnecessary procedures for women.

The study, carried out by researchers at Queen Mary University of London, used various scenarios to determine how many cervical screening tests would be needed by women who received the HPV vaccine at the age of 12.

The Cancer Research UK-funded team from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), found that three screens at 30, 40 and 55 would offer the same benefit to vaccinated women as the 12 lifetime screens now offered in England.

In December 2019, changes to cervical testing will be introduced in England.

Professor Peter Sasieni, Cancer Research UK's screening expert and lead author based at QMUL, said: "The NHS should benefit from the investment that it's made by introducing the vaccination programme".

But the findings suggest IUDs could be an important tool in the fight against cervical cancer, which is on the rise worldwide.

At the moment, labs test for abnormalities in cells taken in a smear test but the new tests will check for the presence of HPV first and only check for abnormal cells if the virus is found.

Dr Julie Sharp, head of health information at Cancer Research UK said: "This is great news for women".

The current HPV vaccine available in the U.S., Gardasil, protects against the types of HPV responsible for more than 70% of cervical cancers, as well as giving protection against 90% of genital warts.

Public Health England (PHE) has appealed to young women to take up their cervical screening invitation.

'Around 3,000 cases are diagnosed every year in the United Kingdom and tragically it causes 900 deaths, nearly all in older women who did not benefit from the HPV vaccination programme.

The researchers highlighted that the initial cohort vaccinated under the immunisation programme was now reaching the age of their first cervical screening invite.

"If we do not reverse falling screening attendance we will simply be faced with more lives lost to the disease which could have been prevented".

Who should have the HPV vaccine?

That is why getting the vaccine during the teenage years is recommended.

Girls can have the HPV vaccination on the NHS up to their 18th birthday but they will need three doses, rather than the normal two, in order to be fully protected if they are over 15. Calculations show that among women using contraception intrauterine device (IUD), the incidence of cervical cancer by one third below. The American Cancer Society now recommends most women be screened every three years.
