Jones, Thome among first-timers on the ballot

Jones, Thome among first-timers on the ballot

The names of the old players in the major Leagues who will be in their first year of eligibility for induction into the hall of fame baseball were unveiled Monday.

The Baseball Writers' Association of America announced the 2018 Hall of Fame ballot and two more ex-Phillies will have a chance to join the all-time baseball greats in Cooperstown.

Jones, an eight-time All-Star, won the 1999 NL MVP and the 2008 NL batting title.

Jones spent 19 years in the majors, and spent all of them as the third baseman for the Atlanta Braves. Players are eligible for election for up to 10 seasons. And beyond that, he was part of those terrifying mid-'90s Braves teams that just kept winning and winning and winning, including the World Series in 1995. He amassed 612 homers (eighth-most on the all-time list) and 1,699 RBIs. Bottom row from left are file photos showing Seattle Mariners' Kevin Millwood in 2012; New York Mets' Johan Santana in 2013; Cleveland Indians' Jim Thome in 2002; Cleveland Indians' Omar Vizquel in 2000 and Chicago Cubs' Carlos Zambrano in 2011.

Jim Thome hit an ungodly number of home runs over his 22-year career.

If you're looking for defense of the highest caliber, look no further than Omar Vizquel. Vizquel was an 11-time Gold Glove victor who set the record for most games at shortstop with 2,709 and the highest fielding percentage at the position at.985. He also stole 404 bases, has more defensive games at shortstop than anyone ever (2,709), and has the highest ever fielding percentage (.985) at that position. His decline was sharp, but he deserves consideration.

Moyer pitched for 25 seasons and won 269 games.

Martinez is on the ballot for the ninth year. Trevor Hoffman, who fell five votes short previous year on the Baseball Writers' Association of America ballot for baseball's Hall of Fame, heads holdovers that include Vladimir Guerrero, Edgar Martinez, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Mike Mussina and Curt Schilling.

Cleveland Indians fans have been given a reason to be nostalgic now that the 2018 National Baseball Hall of Fame ballot has been released.

Here is the complete ballot: Bonds, Carpenter, Roger Clemens, Damon, Vladimir Guerrero, Hernandez, Trevor Hoffman, Hudson, Isinghausen, Andruw Jones, Chipper Jones, Jeff Kent, Lee, Lidge, Edgar Martinez, Matsui, Fred McGriff, Millwood, Moyer, Mike Mussina, Manny Ramirez, Rolen, Santana, Curt Schilling, Gary Sheffield, Sammy Sosa, Thome, Vizquel, Billy Wagner, Larry Walker, Wood and Zambrano.
