Kalabhavan Abi, popular Malayalam comedy artist passes away

He has acted in more than 50 movies.

One of Kalabhavan Abi's last television appearances was in the Mazhavil Manorama sitcom, "Prekshakare Avashyamund".

The actor, who had been undergoing treatment for the illness, was brought to the hospital this morning where he passed away, they said. Apart from the stage shows, he had also released several popular audio cassettes.

Hailing from Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district, Abi rose to prominence through mimicry troupes and became a household name in Kerala with his hilarious portrayal of "Amina Thatha". He started his mimicry career with Kalabhavan in Kochi.

A mimicry artist, Abi and his contemporaries like actor Dileep had become popular in Malayalam cinema in the 90s.

He debuted in movies through Balachandra Menon's "Nayam Vyakthamakkunnu". Remembering Abi, actor Jagadish said that Abi was an artist who fearlessly ventured into new and challenging paths. Abi was famous for his spot-on impressions of Amitabh Bachchan and had lent his voice to numerous veteran actor's commercials.

Actor Tiny Tom said, "We belong to a generation which grew up watching artists like Abi".

Recalling his association with Abi, actor Siddique said, "He was a super star in mimicry".
