Large quake near Iran, Iraq border

Turkish aid agencies become first to deliver relief supplies to northern Iraq after a magnitude 7.2 natural disaster jolted the region near the Iranian border.

At least six people are dead following Sunday's 7.3 quake near the Iraqi city of Halabja, close to the Iraq-Iran border. The region where the quake struck sits upon one of several major fault lines in Iran, and although that country sees quakes nearly daily, the most deadly one in recent history struck in 2003 - a 6.6 magnitude quake that left 26,000 dead.

Faramarz Akbari, governor of the Iranian city of Ghasr-e Shirin, said that six people had died and scores more injured, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.

People were staying out on the streets in towns in the Western Kermanshah province because of the threat from aftershocks, a local Red Crescent official told TV.

Israeli media said the quake was felt in many parts of Israel too.

At least four dead were also reported in Iraq's Kurdistan region.

The deadliest quake in Iran's modern history happened in June 1990.
