Macy's says it's fixed gift, credit card issue

Macy's customers are saying the retailer's credit card system has crashed in locations across the U.S. on Black Friday.

After reports on social media that customers were having issues with credit card payments today, Macy's (NYSE:M) says it's adding personnel to resolve the issue. The statement TechCrunch released has Macy's saying it resolved its system issues and sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience it may have caused during their valued customers' shopping experience.

The retailer attributes the problem to a "capacity-related issue". The retailer began responding to the complaints soon after, asking users having trouble to direct message it.

Early Friday afternoon, social media was flooded with reports from frustrated shoppers in multiple states who said they had stood in long lines only to find out they could only pay for purchases in cash. "Place your order now, and we'll send you an email confirming availability and shipping when our system is back online, or please try again later". The chain has had 11 straight quarters of sales declines at established stores and is counting on this holiday season to turn things around. Last year, Macy's generated roughly 33 per cent of its revenue in the fourth quarter.

Looking to fix those issues, CEO Jeff Gennette implemented a plan referred to as the North Star that was aimed at not only positioning Macy's as a store, but an authority on gift-giving.

"I can't think of anybody that needs this less than Macy's", he said. Consumer confidence seems have to propelled this shopping season to one of the strongest in years.

The setback could not have come at a worse time for Macy's, which has made a major push to improve its performance this holiday shopping season.

Macy's stock closed at $21.07, up 2.1 per cent.
