Mamata mourns Congress leader Dasmunsi's death

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi expressed grief over the demise of senior party leader and former Union Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi on Monday.

A former Union Minister, Dasmunsi died at Apollo Hospital here.

He is survived by his wife Deepa Dasmunsi and son Priyadeep Dasmunsi who were at his bedside at the time of his passing, it said.

Dasmunsi was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha representing the Raiganj Lok Sabha constituency of West Bengal when he suffered the stroke.

Beginning his career as Youth Congress state president in 1970, Dasmunsi went on to win Lok Sabha elections from Kolkata South constituency the next year in 1971 and won the Howrah Lok Sabha constituency in 1984 which he held on till 1991 and won the same constituency again in 1996.

He was sworn in as Union Minister of State, Commerce in 1985.

Dasmunsi was heading the Indian football governing body at the time of his stroke in 2008, which led to Praful Patel taking over as president. "The thoughts and prayers of the Indian football community are with his family and friends during this hard time". "His death is a great loss to the politics of West Bengal", panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee said.

"He was a very popular leader in Bengal since 1972". Dasmunsi played an important role in popularising football in the country, the CM said in a release. "He was still alive but now he is no more", Banerjee said. "He will be greatly remembered for his contributions, especially to Indian Football", @INCIndia, the official Twitter account of the Congress tweeted.

Dasmunsi first became the AIFF President in 1989, succeeding K Ziauddin, and held the position for 19 years.

For years the leader remained speechless and unconscious of his surroundings as the blood supply to a part of his brain was cut off causing irreversible damage.
