Massa says final goodbye to Brazil fans at Interlagos

"I love you. By the way, I loved your start".

Felipe Massa insisted on Thursday that his impending retirement from Formula One is for good, but he is dejected by Brazil's declining significance in the sport.

"I am really emotional today", Massa said in the understatement of the afternoon.

"I love Brazil, but at the moment I will not go back (to live)".

"I did everything in a flawless way from the beginning to the end, fighting with a guy that I was fighting a lot in my career", said an emotional Massa afterwards.

Massa said: "It is a great sadness, not only for people who came and were there, but also for those who hear this and are Brazilian". "Amazing start, then managed to overtake a few cars, managed to overtake (former Ferrari team mate Fernando) Alonso... managed to keep him behind".

If you don't feel a twinge of emotion after that, you are officially dead inside.

Massa had already acknowledged that keeping his emotions in check would be hard in his last two races.

He was back in the line-up within months, after Valtteri Bottas moved from Williams to Mercedes to replace 2016 champion Nico Rosberg, but there will be no coming back after this season.

"We race in Mexico, we've raced in India, and I don't know if it's any more unsafe than there", he said. Zero mistakes. I tried to put pressure on him. "I will never forget today", the Brazilian said after being invited to the podium in a crowded Interlagos track in Sao Paulo. "That's why I did another year".

Massa's final F1 Grand Prix will be at the 2017 finale in Abu Dhabi on November 26.

However, earlier this month Williams confirmed he would not be returning again and they are now considering Robert Kubica, Paul Di Resta and Jolyon Palmer as his potential replacement.

Don't miss the F1 Report on Wednesday at 8.30pm on Sky F1 as Williams co-founder Sir Patrick Head joins Marc Priestley and Natalie Pinkham to review the Brazilian GP.
