Mother Drowned Ten-Day-Old Son in Bathtub

Mother Drowned Ten-Day-Old Son in Bathtub

The mother of a 10-day-old baby has been arrested for the infant's death, according to police in NY.

Police say a 10-day-old baby was found unresponsive inside a Locust Street home Monday afternoon. Police didn't identify the adult who found the child and called 911, but they said "that person has been fully cooperative with the investigation".

Officials say the child, named Jeremiah, was taken to Rochester General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police say that Mitchell went to the store to buy cigarettes after she drowned her son.

According to court documents obtained by the Democrat and Chronicle, Mitchell submerged her son in eight to ten inches of water inside a bathtub.

Mitchell was scheduled to be arraigned on a second-degree murder charge in Rochester City Court Tuesday morning, where the grand jury may have considered additional charges.

Police say Mitchell also has a 7-year-old child, now in the care of a relative.

Mitchell is being held in Monroe County Jail without bail. Authorities also declined discussing Mitchell's mental state. Allegedly the woman beat her 7 year old child with hammer, only to recently have gotten her child back from CPS, before relinquishing the child. Court has since been adjourned but was set to resume for a preliminary hearing Friday morning. In addition to her late 10-day-old son, Mitchell is also the mother of a 7-year-old child, who was not home at the time of the incident and is now in the care of another family member.
