New Windsor, New York, warehouse fire leaves several injured

New Windsor town Supervisor George Green told The Associated Press firefighters were caught in the building when a second explosion occurred.

Black smoke could be seen for miles from the Verla International building, which primarily makes nail polish.

Witnesses described an acrid smell of burning chemicals wafting down the street.

"I don't believe at this point that it is completely under control", he said.

A blaze appears to have broken out as a result of the blasts, with dozens of fire fighters attempting to bring the flames under control.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration hit the plant with nine violations earlier this year, according to NBC. Of those violations, six were classified as "serious".

"Somebody came in and said there's a huge explosion down the street", Morra said.

"Everybody's concerned", Green said. Emergency officials have issued a shelter-in-place alert for people who are in the immediate area of the plant.

Photos from the scene showed large plumes of smoke billowing high into the air.

According to Verla's website, "We specialize in all facets of beauty and bath products for the mass market, specialty retail chains, and department stores, direct sales, professional beauty, TV, electronic retailers and boutiques".
