New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern slams 'unacceptable' Manus Island situation

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern slams 'unacceptable' Manus Island situation

Whether that meeting will go ahead is now in question, after she revealed she'd had another brief chat with Mr Turnbull in passing on Monday morning (local time) but refused to say when any further talks would happen.

In this Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017 image supplied by Hass Hassaballa, asylum seekers sit on the ground as they refuse to leave the Manus Island detention center in Papua New Guinea.

Last week Ms Ardern offered for New Zealand to accept 150 refugee and asylum seekers now detained in a number of Australia's offshore centres.

The offer to take in 150 refugees from Manus Island and Nauru has been on the table since 2013 but is an issue Ms Ardern has gone hard on since becoming prime minister. "I see the need and the role New Zealand needs to play", she said.

She admitted persisting with the issue had the risk of her becoming an irritant to Australia, but said it was important to highlight New Zealand's ability to assist.

"People will die when that happens".

Morteza Saffari, a member of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said, "The Australian government, despite all its apparent support for human rights, has made it very hard for those taking refuge there and pays no attention to human rights [of those concerned] whatsoever", ICANA reported on Saturday.

Government frontbencher Matt Canavan criticised the genuineness of the offer.

Jacinda Ardern wants to have a "substantive" discussion with Malcolm Turnbull at the East Asia Summit about the situation on Manus Island.

DESPITE setting another deadline for the 379 refugees and asylum seekers at the Manus Island regional processing centre to leave yesterday or face forcible eviction, Manus police commander David Yapu says force will not be used to move them.

Mr Turnbull opted not to take up the offer, but did not rule out accepting the deal at a later stage.

Ms Ardern said it was faster to organise the logistics of any deal with Australia.

Almost 600 men have barricaded themselves into the Manus island center for more than 10 days without regular food or water, defying closure attempts by Australia and Papua New Guinea in what the United Nations calls a "looming humanitarian crisis".

The objective of the protest was to prevent anyone inside from leaving, Peace Action Wellington spokeswoman Emma Cullen said.
