Nintendo Making Animated Mario Movie With Studio Behind Minions

Nintendo Making Animated Mario Movie With Studio Behind Minions

That's according to the Wall Street Journal, which reports that Nintendo is in talks with Illumination Entertainment, a subsidiary of Universal Studios responsible for movies like Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets, and Minions.

Having said that, there is no guarantee that this deal will be finalized.

With the failure of the live-action movie, it makes sense that Nintendo would choose the animated route.

Nintendo is reportedly close to signing a deal with Universal Pictures and French animation studio Illumination to bring iconic video game mascot Mario back to the big screen more than two decades after the plumber's ill-fated big-screen debut. You may recall that Nintendo used to be much more active in terms of allowing outside companies to produce films and series based on their properties.

The Super Mario Brothers series has shifted over 330 million units total for Ninitendo in the years since it first landed on consoles in the 1980s, so it's no surprise that a new film is in the offing.

This reveal comes on the heels of the mammothly successful Super Mario Odyssey video game for the Nintendo Switch, and is likely a great move to help capitalize on the character's continuing success.

Mario and Luigi have appeared on the big screen before, in a 1994 live-action film starring Bob Hoskins. While we can't quite fathom what the film's plot will be about, we're going to bet that this theoretical movie will at least be visually pleasing.
