NTSB to Investigate Vegas Driverless Bus Crash

According to Las Vegas officials, the self-driving shuttle did "what it was supposed to do" in efforts to avoid the accident once its sensors detected the oncoming threat - but, while the shuttle stopped, the delivery truck did not.

The crash follows a rising number of incidents involving human drivers behaving improperly or recklessly around self-driving cars.

The autonomous shuttle was testing today when it was grazed by a delivery truck downtown.

A low-speed collision with a delivery truck marked the first day of self-driving shuttle buses in Las Vegas.

"Working together and sharing information will ensure this new technology is safely implemented for the public, and that's AAA's top priority", the organization said in a statement.

Reporter Jeff Zurschmeide, who was on the shuttle at the time of the crash, said the self-driving vehicle did what it was programmed to do but not everything a human driver might do.

'The shuttle did what it was supposed to do, in that it's [sic] sensors registered the truck and the shuttle stopped to avoid the accident. "We had about 20 feet of empty street behind us (I looked), and most human drivers would have thrown the auto into reverse and used some of that space to get away from the truck".

"The shuttle didn't have the ability to move back". Taking corrective action either by swerving is not something the bus has been thus far been approved to do.

According to one of the shuttle's passengers, the collision seemed to happen in "slow-motion". Had the truck had the same sensing equipment that the shuttle has the accident would have been avoided.

Vegas officials were bullish in their response toquestions about the overall safety of AI-driven vehicles on public roads.

Less than two hours after deployment, a self-driving bus in Las Vegas got involved in an accident. The year-long pilot project, sponsored by AAA Northern California, Nevada and Utah, is expected to carry 250,000 people.

The AAA said human error was responsible for more than 90% of the 30,000 deaths on United States roads in 2016, and that robotic cars could help reduce the number of incidents.

The Las Vegas self-driving shuttle, a 12-month pilot project by AAA and Keolis, a transportation management company, offers free rides on a 0.6 mile route around a district which is being developed by the city as a technology hub.

It has an attendant and computer monitor, but no steering wheel and no brake pedals.
