NYC Subway Bans 'Ladies and Gentlemen' to Be 'Sensitive to Gender Identity'

NYC Subway Bans 'Ladies and Gentlemen' to Be 'Sensitive to Gender Identity'

But no: The agency is busy ensuring that all subway personnel stop addressing riders as "ladies and gentlemen."

'Please don't use any greeting other than these, ' a MTA memo on the announcement reads.

Conductors will also have more freedom in terms of announcements, making them more personable and even shouting out local landmarks, reported PIX11.

'They are acknowledging that they have some transgender riders.

No, transit officials "don't want to offend anyone", as one MTA worker summed it up.

The bulletin warns workers that line managers and train service supervisors will be monitoring them to make sure they don't slip and use the verboten phrase.

Following the announcement, New York Twitter users appeared split on the new initiative.

Considering recent reports that show that almost three-quarters of New York Subway lines run chronically behind schedule and the tunnels are infested with rats that can move and devour a large slice of Famous Ray's pizza, you'd think the use of gender neutral announcements might fall a little lower on the list of priorities for MTA.

A number of people hailed the decision as a important step forward in integrating all NY residents in the public sphere.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is opting for a more gender-neutral approach.

Some social media users, however, took umbrage with the MTA's priorities, asking why they weren't focused on more pressing matters like train delays and overcrowding. In the days leading up to Election Day, commuters were reminded to go out and vote through messages on the public address systems on subway and commuter rail trains - another example of the communications shift, an MTA spokesman said at the time.

'The #MTA shouldn't b focusing on gender friendly language.
