Pixar's "Coco" Becomes Mexico's Top Grossing Film of All Time

Marvel's The Avengers was released in 2012 and went on to become one of the highest-grossing movies ever worldwide, with $1.51 billion.

As noted by Variety, Coco has grossed 824 million pesos ($43.1 million) within the first 19 days. Opening over the holiday weekend on November 22 should help its domestic box office prospects. That's why when we settle into the relatively grounded Mexican village of Santa Cecilia at the beginning of the studio's latest breathtaking feature "Coco", we know things will take a turn toward the immaterial sooner rather than later. His family builds shoes, but because he wants to do music he ventures out on his own and ends up in the land of the dead. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael GarcĂa Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the Disney-Pixar movie has been rated at 96% fresh. As it stands, Coco has a very good chance of winning the Academy Award for Best Picture this year, which would be the ninth for Pixar overall. Even with a mildly disappointing Cars 3 or The Good Dinosaur here and there, the studio always seems to rebound with a huge victor like Finding Dory and Inside Out. To make sure Coco got everything right, co-directors Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) and Adrian Molina (Monsters University) spent years traveling through Mexico and learning about their customs firsthand. It looks like all of that hard work is going to pay off in a big way.
