Police arrest 5 in officer-involved shooting

Police arrested five people at a Fall River hospital after they were told their family member did not survive an officer-involved shooting.

Police say the shooting and the hospital disturbance are connected.

Officers were called to a disturbance on Riggenbach Road near Airport Road at approximately 11:45 p.m. Sunday. The first responding police officer tried to stop a vehicle from leaving the scene, at which point the officer opened fire into the vehicle.

Fall River police said in a statement a "complainant" reported there was a "smoking car" and two "loud bangs sounded like gunshots" drawing cops to the scene.

The Bristol County District Attorney's office is investigating whether the police shooting was justified. During that encounter, the officer fired shots into the vehicle, striking the driver.

"The complainant also reported they were unsure if people are fighting or if it was a crash". There were several cars in the area including a green hatchback that had smoke coming out of it.

Neither Quinn's office nor Fall River police answered additional questions about the shooting yesterday.

Friends and relatives of a 19-year-old man say he was shot and later died from his injuries.

At last check, the five suspects arrested have not appeared in Fall River District Court. Police said 10 to 15 of Ruiz-Barreto's family members had gathered at the hospital waiting to hear of his status and were being disruptive.
