RT Editor Responds To Claim Google Will De-Rank News Agencies' Content

Ever since the election of Donald Trump, U.S. politicians have been trying to draw links between the Russian state, which partially funds RT and Sputnik, and Trump's election win.

Following criticism of Russia's online activities created to influence Americans and now other nations, Eric Schmidt has gone on record to say that Google will no longer classify certain Russian sites as news.

The Executive Chairman of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, said the search engine giant will make news articles from Russian-funded news sites hard to find on its platform.

Schmidt did not share a timeline for the move.

At the event, Schmidt added that it's not a form of censorship - rather, he likened it to an editorial decision.

"That's not how we operate", Schmidt declared and went on to clarify that he is strongly against censorship of the internet.

Schmidt also said getting good at artificial intelligence will be very important to both governments and businesses in the coming years.

Sputnik and RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan responded with a statement published on RT.

"We are working on detecting and de-ranking those kinds of sites - it's basically RT and Sputnik".

The organizations can still tweet organically as long as they abide by the terms and conditions, but they can't put money behind tweets to promote them to a certain audience.
