Russell Wilson: Seattle Seahawks likely violated concussion protocol with quarterback

On Thursday night, National Football League referee Walt Anderson sent Russell Wilson back to his sideline out of fear the quarterback may have suffered a concussion.

Seattle has a deep roster and will adjust without Sherman, but his leadership on the field is what will be missed mostly going forward.

After the game, Wilson insisted that he was fine to keep playing, but commended referee Walt Anderson's decision to send him off. As backup Austin Davis entered the game, TV cameras showed Wilson briefly entering the blue injury tent so that his test could be administered in private.

The Seahawks will likely be punished after not following concussion protocol for quarterback Russell Wilson.

The NFL said Friday that it is conducting a "thorough review" of the situation, and later told ESPN that it has not yet started its investigation or come to any conclusions. I was like 'Ah man, it's stuck.' I think I was kind of laying down on the ground for a second just trying to get my jaw back.

ESPN reported that the Seahawks could be fined as much as $150,000.

The NFL concussion policy states that a player believed to have concussion symptoms can not return to "practice or play" unless a team physician and an independent neurological consultant clear him. "I wasn't concussed or anything like that". The league's policy requires players to be cleared by a team physician and an independent neurological consultant before returning to practice or play. I felt completely clear. "I told him I was good, I was good and he said you got to come off. I think Walt did a great job". But he said I should go off the field. We went through the concussion stuff. "It was one of those things you just had to play through as long as you can, then when it goes, it goes". "I answered even some more just so they knew I was good and went back in there".

The concussion protocol was devised jointly by the NFL and the NFL Players Association as part of the continuing efforts on both sides at improving player safety.
