Scottish Labour suspends interim head over abuse claims

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party, responding to the Scottish Labour leadership announcement, said: "I would like to congratulate Richard Leonard on being elected the new leader of the Scottish Labour Party, and Anas Sarwar for his energetic campaign".

Mr Sarwar, MSP for Glasgow, had been backed by several of the party's high-profile politicians including MPs Ian Murray and Harriet Harman, while Mr Leonard had trade union support.

A Scottish Labour Party spokesman confirmed: "Alex Rowley has stood aside as interim and deputy leader of Scottish Labour and referred himself to the party's internal complaints procedure regarding allegations made against him".

He told his supporters: "I joined the Labour Party in Stirling 35 years ago because I knew that the only way to bring about real change was to combine, to unite and to campaign in order to win power".

Election to parliament is a privilege to serve and represent people.

He immediately pledged "zero tolerance" of sexism, misogyny and sexual harassment.

When asked if Dugdale will be suspended, Leonard said: "Well we will need to have a discussion as a group next week".

Mr Leonard has been an Member of Scottish Parliament (MSP) for just over a year, winning his seat in May 2016.

But who is Scotland's newest party leader?

"After being written off time and again, the General Election showed that our Party is capturing the mood both in Scotland and across the rest of the UK".

"There is much to do to continue our party's revival in Scotland and many who still need to be persuaded to put their trust in the Labour Party".

He becomes the fourth MSP to take over as Scottish Labour leader since 2011. This can be a turning point in Scottish politics and our party will now come together, united to challenge Tory and SNP austerity that has held Scotland back.

"I think we will arrive at a collective decision".

In a vote which saw a 62.3 per cent turnout, Mr Leonard won a 56.7 per cent share, with Mr Sarwar on 43.3 per cent.
